you also have to consider the travel distances, usa is a vast country and travel in-betweeen cities here can be long and expensive. Since you want to go to NYC, you might want to stay in that general region and also visit Boston,DC, Philadelphia etc. But in direct answer to your question no i dont think a week will be too long in SanFran if you manage your $ well.
