PS3 black ops can't play online...?

Now that the network is up I was gonna play online with a buddy. but his ps3 for some reason can't get online on black ops. when we go into the multiplayer he can click playstation network and he can select player match, private, wager, theater or on at training like normal but once it comes down to choosing the game type (tdm/demolition etc.) all the options are gray and unselectable. anyone know what this is?
